Beautiful (reimagined)

by Ben Caplan

/

about

It’s been ten years since Ben Caplan’s debut album, in the time of the great remembering. To mark the occasion, the hirsute Canadian singer has released a new single. Hopefully it’s the first taste of a larger project. The song, entitled Beautiful, is a strikingly minimalistic reimagining of a track first released a decade ago. Accompanied by gently plucked classical guitar and delicate piano, what really makes this track stand out is Caplan’s immaculate vocal performance.

With this song, we get to hear a side of Ben Caplan that he seldom shares. Known for his enormous and commanding voice, on this offering we hear a remarkably intimate and tender approach. Caplan reports that he recorded the track at Daniel Ledwell’s lakeside studio in rural Nova Scotia in the midst of the pandemic. It feels like Caplan has found a way to transport each of us to that quiet room by the lake in order to share a moment of tenderness.

“During a hard pandemic,” Caplan said, “I took great pleasure in working on soft things. This song felt like a good first piece of music to release as the pandemic begins to wind down. The first verse repeats the phrase, ‘I want to be near you.’ I think that’s a sentiment we can all relate to right now.”

about

Ben Caplan Halifax, Nova Scotia

A charismatic charmer and a smasher of pianos. A madman and an earnest poet. A strummer of delicate chords and a lover of bent and broken melodies. His rough and textured tones cut through crowded halls; an enormous voice, roaring louder than raucous crowds. Once he has your attention, Caplan can croon smoother than a glass of single malt whisky, pouring beauty into a harsh world. ... more
